"Get Involved" your first step into thoroughbred racing.
Over the last few months i have been putting pen to paper and finally my book is complete and you can view it at the link below:

Owning a racehorse doesn't mean just running out and buying a yearling at a big sale. There are a lot of options, each with its own risks and benefits, and you need to decide which way is right for you. This ebook will teach you the different ways to buy and race a horse.

Why read it?

This guide is especially handy if you haven‟t experienced a lot of the ground work in thoroughbred racing yet or if you are involved in racing but don‟t do any of the real work. I hope to shed some light on some common interface elements and challenges people often have with them.

Why write it?

The reason for writing is because many people (me included) make many mistakes when making their first thoroughbred purchase. A lot of books have been written in the past but the threshold for reading them, especially if you have never raced a horse, is quite big, hence the creation of this book. This is by no means a complete guide or solid set of rules, but it is definitely a good start.

Trackside TV under the knife
TAB cost cutting is about to hit racing's Trackside television channel with scores of redundancies, the axing of most shows, and reduced raceday coverage.

And the impending cuts have industry leaders worried the channel, racing's shop window, will become a turnoff for viewers with little more than wall-to-wall racing from obscure overseas venues.

The job losses will hit everyone from senior managers to the newest recruits, as New Zealand Racing Board bosses try to save $12 million in the wake of declining betting turnover.

Jockeys right up there in the dangerous jobs stakes
A jockey's life is about the most dangerous there is, a new study in Australia has found.

Researchers say that in the danger stakes, being a jockey was only just outranked by offshore fishermen.

The Australian Racing Board said the study, published in the Australian Medical Journal, confirmed the importance racing authorities placed on improving health and safety standards.

"We welcome this research as reinforcing the importance of our ongoing efforts to make health and safety in Australian racing as safe as possible," ARB chairman Bob Bentley said.

Tinsley's local knowledge gets nod for Sarge in Charge
Queensland trainer Liam Birchley has gone for local experience by engaging Hayden Tinsley to ride Sarge in Charge in the Karaka Million at Ellerslie on January 25.

Sarge In Charge will leave for New Zealand on Saturday after Birchley was unable to find a suitable lead-up race for the youngster in Queensland.

"There's no races around for him here so he'll go straight into the Karaka Million without another run," Birchley said.

"He had a good barrier trial last week and finished third over 1100 metres at Eagle Farm.

Daffodil Blooms In One Thousand Guineas
A week of excruciating pain brought on by a kick from a horse wasn't enough to stop Hayden Tinsley from riding Daffodil in the One Thousand Guineas at Riccarton.

The reward for the pain was his 11th Group One win and he has an even greater appreciation of the talent of the Kevin Gray-trained filly.

"That acceleration she showed over the final furlong still surprises me now," Tinsley told NZPA.

Daffodil had to come from behind the favourite Juice, who sprinted clear at the 300m, but she gathered her in with ease to win Saturday's 1600m feature by a length.

Tinsley planning Riccarton return
TIM BARTON - The Dominion Post

Hayden Tinsley  hopes to be fit to ride at Riccarton on Saturday.

Tinsley missed the Trentham meeting yesterday after being kicked in the birdcage at Awapuni last Saturday.

He spent the night in hospital and was still in some pain yesterday, from bruising around the kidney area.

"It's pretty sore when I bend over or use the back muscles," Tinsley said.

"But I will take it easy for a couple of days and hopefully get back on a horse on Thursday or, at the latest, Friday."

Tinsley is especially keen to make the Riccarton meeting as he regards the central districts filly Daffodil as a winning chance in the $325,000 One Thousand Guineas (1600m).

Long ban for leading jockeys
By AIDAN RODLEY - Waikato Times

Moments after disqualifying top rider Bruce Herd for 15 months, Judicial Control Authority chairman Murray McKechnie urged the Palmerston North jockey not to give up on racing.

"Mr Herd, you are too good not to be in this game. Don't give up on it," Mr McKechnie said following yesterday's hearing at Te Rapa.

Herd, 38 and a winner of more than 1000 races in New Zealand will ride at Palmerston North today then disappear from racing ranks until at least February 1, 2010, after he admitted a serious racing charge relating to a urine sample switch during random drug testing at a Te Rapa race meeting on October 3. New Zealand's current best jockey, Opie Bosson, was disqualified for four months for supplying Herd with the urine sample. Herd, who was also ordered to pay costs of $2300, was disappointed with the length of his disqualification and afterwards would not be drawn on his future. "This affects a lot of people," he said. "I feel sorry for Opie. I shouldn't have dragged him into it."

Tinsley gains Kelt mount on Boundless
TIM BARTON - The Dominion Post.

Palmerston North jockey Hayden Tinsley will ride New Zealand Oaks winner Boundless in the $2 million Kelt Stakes (2040m) at Hastings next month.

Tinsley partnered Boundless in the Oaks win but did not ride the mare in her three subsequent starts.

Leith Innes had the mount when Boundless won a rating 90 2100m at Ellerslie in April and Melbourne jockey Damien Oliver was the rider when Boundless ran second, beaten a half-neck, in the Australian Oaks.

Apprentice Danielle Johnson rode Boundless when the Ardmore mare resumed with a fresh-up win over 1200m at Tauranga last month.

Derby stake increased to $2.2m
The announcement was made by Racing Minister Winston Peters at the Mercedes Thoroughbred Awards dinner at Mystery Creek in Hamilton.

"This year's Budget contained a $9 million, three-year scheme to significantly lift prize money for key New Zealand races," said Peters.

"This initiative is designed to help our clubs compete with money on offer overseas, to encourage greater bloodstock investment in New Zealand, and to help ensure our best horses stay in the country.

"As a result, four top thoroughbred races will this season join the Kelt Capital Stakes ($2 million) and Karaka Million ($1 million) in offering stakes of $1 million or more.

Chief stipe seeks increase in riding fine to $50,000
New Zealand racing's chief stipendiary steward Cameron George wants the maximum fine for a riding infringement increased from $10,000 to at least $50,000.

The increase is linked to relegation rule changes.

From July 1 it will be required to be shown a horse which suffered interference, so long as it can be promoted to a stakes bearing place, would have beaten the horse causing interference.

Current rules say it only needs to be shown that a horse which suffered interference would have finished in a higher placing.

The new rule could also promote a win at all costs attitude from jockeys. But George was keen to put a significant deterrent in place.

George said the highest fine at present is $10,000.
